    Did you know ...

Given the state of the economy today, people are becoming increasingly aware of how and where the products they use every day are manufactured. Of course everyone is aware that there are cost efficiencies to manufacturing 'off shore.' Often products are made in huge plants that produce several items requiring the same technologies? For instance a plant that produces underwear might also produce shorts, ski pants, bathing suits and sweats. They all require sewers and sewing machines, they all fit the same part of the body and have similar cuts and modern efficiencies can see them shipped all over the world from any location that might be convenient for the plant to find optimal production facilities and employees.

HipSaver/DermaSaver has taken a different view on manufacturing. Our plant manufactures only HipSaver Hip Protectors and DermaSaver products. Furthermore, they manufacture them from start to finish in one plant just outside of Boston, Massachusetts. There's none of this cut them in one place, sew them in another and finish them someplace else. More importantly, nothing is done off shore.

What does that mean for our customers? Easy - in a plant dedicated to nothing other than these two product lines, quality control is built into the manufacturing process from start to finish.

    DermaSaver Patent Awarded

CANTON, MA, Dec 06, 2011 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) -- The United States Patent Office has awarded a patent to Ed Goodwin, president of HipSaver Inc., for its line of DermaSaver(R) skin protectors. The DermaSaver products are called "tubes" and provide a loose fitting protective layer of resilient three dimensional fabric to protect the skin on the arms and legs off the frail elderly. Traditional products available on the market fit tightly and are made of flat fabric that offers no pressure or shock protection. In awarding the patent, the patent office notes that no three dimensional fabric skin protectors were available prior to the DermaSaver tubes. The issued patent can be seen at www.uspto.gov and searching for patent # 8,070,705.
Older persons have fragile skin which is often made more fragile by medications such as blood thinners and steroids. Slight friction or bumping can cause "skin tears" where the top layer of skin is torn away. Skin tears frequently occur when a care giver is assisting an elderly person in transferring from a bed to a chair. Skin tears require nursing care with ointments and bandages and, on occasion, dreaded trips to a wound care clinic. The resilient DermaSaver tubes mitigate against these assaults to the skin by absorbing the bumps and friction into the base three dimensional fabric. The wash and wear DermaSaver tubes work as both prevention and as a curative for existing wounds. Skin tears occur mainly in older people covered by Medicare so the DermaSaver tubes, costing an average of $22 each, are an economical way to prevent suffering and save tax-payer Medicare dollars.
"It's really neat to create manufacturing jobs in the USA, improve the health of older people, and save taxpayer money with this novel, but simple product," states inventor Ed Goodwin. "Doctors and nurses have rapidly adopted the DermaSaver tubes as the preferred product for their skin care plans."

    Fax is Back!

Mr. Bell Repairman got our fax machine humming again ... and judging by the number of faxes pumping out of the machine you all know that already! Thank you for your patience and we look forward to getting your orders out to you.

    Fax

Our fax line together with our phone lines were cut yesterday during some nearby construction. We thought it was all corrected but as it turns out, we had our phone lines back but not the fax. The Bell repairman is here now working on restoring it. In the meantime, the phone lines and the email still work so feel free to contact us using them. Our apologies for any inconvenience.

CANADA POST - if a strike happens

As you are all no doubt aware, the potential exists for Canada Post to go on strike on Thursday June 2nd at midnight. In anticipation of strike action DermaSaver Canada will be shipping via Fed-Ex. We currently have the capability to ship Express and as of tomorrow (June 1) we will be able to ship Ground which is what we will use as our default shipping method. We have stopped shipping via Canada Post as of today in order to minimize shipments being stuck in warehouses for the duration of any strike.

    Individual customers:
During any strike action we will not be able to accept payment via cheque or money order as there is no way for customers to get those to us. VISA and MasterCard will be the only acceptable payment methods that allows us to ship to individual customers.

    Facilities:
Facilities will be able to continue using their existing accounts with us. We would expect that facilities would make arrangements for EFT payments or corporate credit card account payments so that they are able to keep their account balances current.

    Welcome back to the blog!

We've been away from blogging for a while but as the end of year has passed for most facilities there should be a bit of extra time for those of us in the DermaSaver Canadian headquarters to get back to bringing bits and pieces to you.

The hot seller for DermaSaver these days? Shin Tubes. When you think about it, the shins are a pretty ripe area for wounds. Not much skin or fat to offer protection from bumping into the furniture which may be difficult to see for some in the first place. Shin injuries seem to be common for those who spend large quantities of time in wheelchairs as well. Here's a case study on a resident with shin injuries which was treated by using DermaSaver Shin Tubes.
